The story of Ashbridge House is one of a family’s legacy woven into the fabric of Lower Merion Township. Right here, in front of you, stands a testament to the early Welsh Quaker settlers and their enduring impact on the land. Built in 1769, Ashbridge House is a grand, multi-colored fieldstone mansion that was erected by Rees Thomas III and his father, William. The house rests on part of an original land grant of 625 acres purchased by the grandfather, Rees Thomas, after 1683. A stone above the present front porch marks the event with their names and their wives’ initials: “E” for William’s wife, Elizabeth, and “P” for Rees’ wife, Priscilla. The house witnessed many changing land owners, passing from the Thomas family to George Dunn, then Peter Pechin. Pechin’s daughter, Rebecca Emily, inherited the farm and married Joshua Ashbridge. It was through the generosity of their daughter, Emily Ashbridge, that the house and grounds were left to Lower Merion Township in 1940. Today, Ashbridge House stands as a reminder of a time when Quaker settlers transformed the land and their legacy continues to inspire the community.
