In 1980, a seed of faith was planted in San Diego. Bishop Leo T. Maher established Ascension Catholic Church. Our journey begins not within these walls, but a few miles away at Miller Elementary School. Imagine the scene: August 17, 1980, the first Mass held in a humble school auditorium. Daily Masses continued, not in a grand sanctuary, but in a simple rectory garage at the corner of La Cuenta and Clairemont Mesa Blvd. This unassuming beginning speaks volumes about the spirit of Ascension Catholic Church. Five years later, on November 23, 1985, the dream materialized. The Ascension Catholic Church building we stand before was dedicated by Monsignor Dolan and Bishop Maher. The church wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was a testament to the growing community’s dedication and faith. Ascension Catholic Church continued to flourish. A new chapter began on June 29th with the dedication of the John Paul II Parish Center and St. James Pavilion. This 10,000-square-foot space, capable of holding 304 people, became a hub for social gatherings, meetings, and educational classes. The adjacent pavilion and patio offered a more intimate space for smaller groups of up to 60. These additions weren’t just about expansion. They represented Ascension Catholic Church’s commitment to fostering connection and community. The church has seen a succession of devoted pastors, each leaving their mark. From Father James Sassone to Father Edwin Tutor, their leadership guided the church through decades of growth and service. Deacon Jim Scull, ordained in 1984, has been an integral part of Ascension Catholic Church since 1982, witnessing firsthand the evolution of this vibrant community. Ascension Catholic Church stands today as more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith, community, and the enduring power of shared belief.
