What stories do these walls hold? For over two centuries, the Asamang Co-Op Beads Manufacturing has stood as a testament to family tradition and artistry.

Welcome to a place where history is not just remembered. It is meticulously crafted into each colorful bead. Here at Asamang Co-Op Beads Manufacturing, the Opoku family has been shaping glass into treasures since the early 1800s.

Imagine David Opoku, a young man of 27. He stands alongside his sister and seven other family members. They are all diligently learning the ancient craft. Under the watchful eyes of their elders, they transform recycled glass into vibrant beads.

Opoku proudly shares that he learned the techniques from his mother and uncle. They in turn learned from their parents. Maame Gyaama, Opoku’s mother, now presides over the family business. She ensures that their unique bead-making secrets are passed down through generations.

The heart of Asamang Co-Op Beads Manufacturing lies within a modest concrete building. Tucked away behind the village church, it houses the tools of their trade. You would find glass bottles, molds, and other essential supplies. Nearby, a clay kiln sits beneath a thatched roof. This is where the magic truly happens.

The process begins with crushing bottles and scrap glass using a mortar and pestle. The glass is ground into a fine powder. A ceramic binding agent, imported from the United States, is added. This mixture is carefully layered into clay molds.

Asamang Co-Op Beads Manufacturing uses two types of disc-shaped molds: Krobo and Meteyi. Krobo molds create beads vertically. Meteyi molds form them horizontally. Cassava stems are placed in the center of each mold. These stems burn away during firing, creating the signature center holes.

The color of the original bottles greatly influences the final appearance of the beads. After filling the molds with assorted glass powder mixtures, they are placed in the kiln. They remain there for several hours until the glass fuses. The exact temperatures and colorants used remain a closely guarded secret.

Agatha Ofori Sampong, from the Ghana Tourism Authority, explains that each family employs slightly different methods. These methods are a trade secret. These secrets are protected because their income depends on it.

Beads hold significant cultural importance in Ghana. They are used for necklaces, buttons, and decorations. Different colors express various moods and feelings. Red and black symbolize funerals and mourning. White is used for celebrations. Gold is worn to show off.

While many villages in the Ashanti Region once produced beads, Asamang continues to thrive. It is a destination for those seeking authentic, handcrafted beads. Opoku understands the importance of preserving his family’s legacy. He embraces the responsibility of providing for his mother and family.

Step inside Asamang Co-Op Beads Manufacturing. Witness the artistry. Feel the history. Take home a piece of Ghana’s vibrant culture. These beads are more than just adornments. They are stories waiting to be told.
