“Water Lilies” in Japan? It sounds improbable doesn’t it? Yet, here we stand before the Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art a unique place where Impressionist masterpieces meet Japanese folk art. This isn’t just another museum it’s a testament to the vision of two remarkable men.

The Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum began as the private villa of Shotaro Kaga. He was a Kansai businessman with a taste for the finer things. Kaga helped found Nikka Whisky Distilling. Later he gifted his shares to Tamesaburo Yamamoto. Yamamoto was his close friend and the first president of Asahi Breweries. This bond between whisky and beer unexpectedly laid the foundation for this museum.

Look around. Notice the villa’s architecture. Kaga, having studied in Europe, designed it with a distinct English Tudor Gothic influence. It was completed around 1932. The villa became a beloved spot for locals. However after Kaga and his wife passed away, the villa was sold. A plan emerged to demolish it in 1989.

Fortunately, local residents rallied to save it. Asahi Breweries stepped in. They restored the villa. In 1996, the Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art opened its doors. The museum showcases modern architecture and art. It stands on land steeped in history.

But there is more. The Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum doesn’t just house Kaga’s villa. It also includes two annexes designed by Tadao Ando. They are called the Underground Jewelry Box and the Dream Box. The Underground Jewelry Box is home to Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies” series. This juxtaposition of Impressionism and Ando’s modern design creates a striking contrast.

Inside you will find ceramics by Kanjiro Kawai and Bernard Leach. These pieces represent the Japanese Mingei folk crafts movement. Yamamoto passionately supported this movement. The museum’s collection features about 1,000 artworks.

Before you leave be sure to take in the surroundings of the Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum. From the terrace you can see the Katsura, Kizu and Uji Rivers converge. The lotus pond mirrors Monet’s “Water Lilies” in summer.

The Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum is a beautiful blend of art history and natural beauty. It shows the power of preservation and the enduring connections between people and art. As you continue your journey remember this unique intersection of cultures and visions. It is all thanks to beer, whisky, art and friendship.
