What if a college could be both a champion and a cautionary tale? ASA College, a for-profit institution in New York City, embodies this paradox. Here, standing before its former location, we unravel a story of ambition, controversy, and ultimately, closure. ASA College first opened its doors in 1985 in Manhattan. Its initial focus was on computer programming, addressing a significant shortage of qualified programmers in the city at the time. The college, then known as Advanced Software Analysis, quickly gained traction. By 1999, ASA College expanded its offerings. The New York State Board of Regents granted it authority to award degrees in various fields, from accounting and computer programming to information technology and medical assisting. ASA College wasn’t just about academics; it also had a vibrant athletic program. Established in 2008, the program grew to encompass 13 sports across its campuses. Its teams, known as the Avengers in Brooklyn, competed in the NJCAA Division I. The college even celebrated national championships in tennis under Coach Brian Slack. However, behind the facade of success, a darker narrative was brewing. In 2018, President Alex Shchegol was removed following allegations of sexual misconduct and substantial settlements. Although he was briefly ousted, Shchegol, as the owner, orchestrated his return to power in 2021. This marked the beginning of a turbulent period for ASA College. In 2022, the US Department of Education restricted the college’s access to federal financial aid. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education then announced the withdrawal of ASA College’s accreditation, citing concerns about the quality of education. The college eventually closed its doors on March 1, 2023. ASA College’s story is a complex one. It began with a vision to fill a crucial gap in the tech industry and expanded to offer opportunities to many students. Yet, it also serves as a stark reminder of the potential pitfalls of for-profit education and the importance of ethical leadership. Today, as we stand here, the physical presence of ASA College may be gone, but its story echoes, prompting us to reflect on the delicate balance between ambition and integrity in the pursuit of education.
