Doesn’t the five-tiered rajagopuram seem to reach for the sky? Right here, before the Arulmigu Thandayuthapani Kovil in Johor Bahru, we are about to step back in time and into a vibrant tapestry of culture and devotion. Though I don’t have all the specifics for this particular temple in Johor Bahru, I can share the fascinating story of a sister temple in Singapore, the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple. It shares the same deity, Lord Murugan, and much of the same cultural heritage.

The story begins in the mid-19th century. Britain’s East India Company flourished. Wealthy Nattukottai Chettiars from Tamil Nadu migrated to Singapore. They were traders and bankers. However, building a temple for Siva was not possible then. Instead, they built temples for Lord Murugan. Non-Brahmin priests could perform the rites in these temples.

Let’s imagine those early Chettiars arriving in Singapore. They carried not just their belongings but their faith. In 1858, they installed a Vel, a spear representing Murugan, under a holy pipal tree. This marked a sacred space for worship. One year later, the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple was built. Its main deity was Thendayuthapani. The Vel represented Lord Murugan. Many Tamil devotees worshiped him as the Supreme God.

The Chettiars added more deities and facilities over time. Sanctums for Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi were built in 1878. The impressive rajagopuram, towering at 75 feet, was completed in 1983. It became the tallest in East Asia.

The temple became a social hub. Singaporeans believed in cleanliness, and the temple was spick-and-span. There were no beggars or hawkers. The space felt open and serene.

Each year, the Thendayuthapani Temple celebrates Thaipusam. Devotees perform a special penance. They believe their problems will vanish. The simplest kavadi involves carrying a wooden pole with baskets. More elaborate ones are decorated with peacock feathers. Devotees walk barefoot for miles. They observe celibacy and eat vegetarian food.

The day before Thaipusam, Lord Murugan goes on a city procession. He rides in a silver chariot. On Thaipusam, devotees carry kavadis. They dance and shout “Vel, Vel, Vetri Vel.” Some pierce their cheeks with small vels. They willingly endure suffering to fulfill their vows.

Temples like the Arulmigu Thandayuthapani Kovil promote Indian culture. They host festivals and music concerts. They conduct religious rites and host weddings. These temples connect devotees to their heritage. They act as a bridge to India.

Just as the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple in Singapore became a beacon of faith and community, so too does the Arulmigu Thandayuthapani Kovil. May it continue to be a place of devotion, cultural preservation, and spiritual solace for generations to come.
