Ever dreamt of a goddess arriving as a serpent? Here at Arulmigu Sri Pushpavalli Ammal Temple that legend is very real. This temple’s history began in the 1950s. The government developed the NGO Colony then. It designated this spot for a temple. Even before that a Vinayagar idol stood here. People worshipped it.
But something extraordinary happened nearby. A large anthill teemed with serpents. Locals killed one serpent. Soon a resident had a dream. The Amman goddess revealed herself. She had come as a serpent. An idol of Amman was placed here. People began worshipping her.
Facing east Lord Varasakthi Vinayagar resides in the main sanctum. Opposite him on a pillar is Lord Anjaneya. He faces Vinayagar. Alcoves on the main sanctum’s walls hold deities. Lord Dakshinamoorthi is on the left. Vishnu is at the rear. Goddess Vishnu Durgai is on the right.
Lord Subramaniar with Valli and Deivanai stand adjacent. They are on the right side of the main sanctum. Goddess Pushpavalli Amman graces a separate sanctum next to it. She blesses devotees in a sitting posture. A small bust of Amman is beneath the idol. Navagrahams occupy the right corner. On the left the temple’s sthala vriksham stands. Under it is the original Vinayagar idol. Lord Nagar is also there.
The temple’s latest kumbhabhishekam was in 2010. That is when it gained its current structure. Before that the idols were under a roof. The decision to build the temple came in the early 2000s. Special poojas mark the calendar here. Aadi Thiruvizha occurs for three days in Aadi month. Koozhvarthal and Paal Kudam are part of the grand rituals. Vasantha Navarathri happens in Chithirai month. Goddess Pushpavalli is adorned with various flowers for 10 days. During Navarathri she appears as Gowri, Gowmari, Vaishnavi and Gayathri. She is also Rajarajeshwari and Balambigai. Special poojas take place. Homam occurs for Varasakthi Vinayagar during Vinayaga Chathurthi. Special abhishekam and santhanakappu follow.
Maha abhishekam happens during Sankada Hara Chathurthi at 7 pm. Every Pournami sees special abhishekam for Ambal. Guru Peyarchi and Sani Paeyarchi involve special homams. Samashti Archanai also takes place.
The name Pushpavalli Amman itself is rare and special. During Aadi Pooram childless women participate in a special pooja. Many have had positive results. They return the next year with their newborn. Devotees claim relief from body ailments after worshipping here.
