A vibrant lemon-yellow beacon greets you. This is the Seoul National University Arts Research Center. Its striking wayfinding system isn’t just for navigation. It’s a work of art itself.
The Arts Research Center isn’t your typical building. It’s a modern L-shaped steel frame. A glass atrium forms its heart. Students faculty and visitors enter from various points on the hillside. This unique design initially caused confusion.
YiEUM Partners tackled this challenge. They collaborated with SNU students. Together they mapped foot traffic and student schedules. They discovered most students didn’t use the ‘first floor’. They rarely entered and exited through the same door. Interviews revealed disorientation. Meetings and giving directions were difficult.
The solution was ingenious. Floor graphics at the top of each staircase instantly tell you your level. The atrium’s cold concrete and glass are warmed by the bold yellow signage. This acts as both a guide and a gathering spot.
The wayfinding system has transformed the Arts Research Center. Requests for directions to the facility management office plummeted. Students now navigate with ease. New students find their way intuitively. The bright signage even serves as an unexpected meeting place.
The Arts Research Center’s wayfinding system is more than practical. It’s a testament to creative problem-solving. It’s a vibrant addition to the campus and a perfect example of design enhancing functionality and aesthetics. The entire project demonstrates the power of collaborative design. It showcases how thoughtful consideration can solve complex problems beautifully.
