In 1979, a collective of young, ambitious artists dreamt of a space where multidisciplinary art could flourish. They envisioned a haven for research, experimentation, and collaboration. This dream took root right here at Articule, nestled in Montreal’s vibrant Mile End. Articule was officially born as a non-profit in 1980. The artists initially rented a space on de la Montagne Street, pooling their resources and sharing the responsibilities of programming and management. Articule quickly became a vital part of Montreal’s network of parallel galleries. Articule’s journey has taken it through several locations, finally settling in its current bright and airy space in the Mile End in 2006. The centre’s history is etched into the very walls of this building, a testament to the enduring vision of its founders. Articule has always championed bilingualism, collaborative work, and participative management. These principles, established by the founding members, continue to guide the centre’s operations today. Articule’s programming reflects a commitment to diverse artistic expression. It has showcased everything from site-specific choreography by artists like Dena Davida and Mona Hatoum to Fluxus theatre featuring Geoffrey Hendricks and John Giorno. Articule’s influence extends beyond its walls. Through partnerships with local businesses, Articule has brought art to unconventional spaces like storefronts, apartment buildings, hospitals, even a Salvation Army. In the 1990s, Articule embraced multimedia programming, featuring works by artists like Trinh T. Minh-ha, Steve Reinke, and Pipilotti Rist. Articule also launched special projects designed for site-specific works and has undertaken art conservation efforts. Articule has always been a hub for dialogue and knowledge sharing, evident in its publishing of the magazine *Discussion* and its organization of thematic conferences and workshops that bring together artists from around the world. Throughout its existence, Articule has nurtured emerging talents while also showcasing internationally renowned artists like Marie Chouinard, Michael Snow, Chris Burden, Martha Rosler, and Carolee Schneemann. Articule’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity took a significant step forward in 2011 with the formation of the Fabulous (Anti-Oppression) Committee. This led to the creation of Montreal Monochrome, a conference addressing under-representation and systemic oppression within Montreal’s contemporary art scene. Articule’s story is one of continuous evolution, a journey driven by a passion for art, community, and social engagement. It stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring spirit of artistic innovation.
