Established in 1980 Artexte initially functioned as a bookstore specializing in contemporary Canadian and international art. Artexte was founded by art historian Francine Périnet and artists Angela Grauerholz and Anne Ramsden. They recognized a critical need in Quebec and Canada for timely accurate information on contemporary visual arts. To address this Artexte opened a documentation centre in Montreal. This wasn’t just any bookstore. It was a hub a vital resource for artists researchers and anyone passionate about the visual arts landscape.
Artexte’s Editions a publishing arm was also established. This arm produced about 20 titles. Artexte also ran a national distribution service for exhibition catalogues and independent publications on contemporary art. This service proved invaluable. It ensured wider access to crucial documentation.
In 1993 Artexte’s bookstore moved to the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. A significant milestone came in 1995. Artexte transitioned its bookstore operations to Librairie Olivieri. This partnership ensured the continuation of the bookstore’s focus on contemporary art literature. The Librairie Olivieri du Musée however later closed its doors in 2009.
Artexte continued to evolve. In May 1996 Artexte relocated to a larger space at 460 Sainte-Catherine Street West. This move placed Artexte at the heart of Montreal’s artistic community. It was a strategic location ensuring greater visibility and accessibility for artists and researchers alike.
Artexte’s journey continued. In 2012 Artexte moved again this time to a vibrant location in Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles. The new space was even more impressive. Artexte now occupied a large bright space on the third floor of the 2-22 Building. The new premises included a larger research area. It also boasted a new exhibition space showcasing work connected to print culture and visual arts documents.
Today Artexte houses an impressive collection. It includes over 30000 publications and various documents both physical and digital. The collection includes 11000 documentation files on arts organizations events and disciplines. Thousands of artists’ files both Canadian and international are also part of the collection. Artexte also holds a rich selection of Canadian and foreign art periodicals. Special collections like the Mobilivre-Bookmobile Project further enrich this significant resource.
Artexte’s commitment to open access is evident in its e-Artexte digital repository. This online platform makes many documents accessible to a global audience. Artexte’s activities extend beyond its collection. They include research residencies publishing and exhibitions. These initiatives continue to support and promote contemporary visual arts in Quebec Canada and beyond. Artexte has truly become a cornerstone of Canada’s art world a place where history innovation and critical engagement converge.
