Stepping inside ART ROOM in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim feels like entering a living history of local art. Founded in May 2000 by artists Babette Apollonia and Tom Schrage, ART ROOM began as a space for their own exhibitions. It evolved into a vibrant platform for both national and international artists. ART ROOM pulsates with creative energy. Every month, new art exhibitions appear, organized by the dedicated ART ROOM Freundeskreis. This group of art enthusiasts curates the shows and manages the gallery. ART ROOM is more than just a gallery. It’s a testament to the power of community. The Freundeskreis, with members like Margret Langen, Tom Schrage, Andreas Egerland, and the late Einhard Zang and Wolfgang Winkler, volunteer their time. They handle everything from opening hours and exhibition previews to press relations. Their dedication stems from a shared love of art and a desire to foster creative exchange. ART ROOM, as a producer gallery, facilitates encounters between artists and art lovers. It offers artists a space to showcase their work and connect with a wider audience. One notable event at ART ROOM was the “sieben” exhibition by Kiara Knevels, open to the public on February 1st, 2025. Another was the “Visage du Collage” exhibition held from April 30th to June 2nd, 2022. This group exhibition featured the works of Bernadette Willigens, Margret Langen, Ingrid Winkler, Andreas Egerland, and Tom Schrage, who also creates electronic music under the pseudonym “Arrieta Toxic”. A shift occurred in 2018. For 17 years, ART ROOM hosted 11 external exhibitions annually. The Freundeskreis, after some personnel changes, decided to refocus. While maintaining their commitment to being a platform for artists, they now emphasize showcasing their own work. The number of external exhibitions was reduced to a maximum of eight per year. However, the annual group exhibition of the Freundeskreis, including participation in the “Gerresheimer Kunstmeile”, continues each May. ART ROOM isn’t just about exhibiting art. It’s about fostering a community, nurturing talent, and ensuring that the vibrant spirit of Düsseldorf-Gerresheim’s art scene continues to flourish.
