Here stands Art Park, a space born from Osaka’s artistic heart. Did you know its story began with Expo ’70?

That world exposition in Suita transformed this area. It became a cultural haven. Expo ’70 Commemorative Park emerged, a green space with cultural, athletic, and leisure facilities.

Art Park is a part of this legacy. It is near the Tower of the Sun, a symbol created by artist Taro Okamoto. This tower stands in the Natural and Cultural Gardens.

The National Museum of Art, Osaka, adds to the park’s artistic flavor. Originally at the Expo Commemorative Park in 1977, it was for collecting art from Japan and overseas, centering around contemporary art. The museum has since moved to Nakanoshima.

The museum’s history is intertwined with the Expo. The Expo Museum of Fine Arts was preserved. It was considered for a permanent art museum. In 1977, it reopened as the National Museum of Art.

Budget constraints shaped its early collection. Initial plans included photographic reproductions. Contemporary works were easier to obtain and helped define the museum’s direction.

One notable donation came from Kaichi Ohashi’s family. This donation significantly expanded the museum’s collection. Today, the National Museum of Art, Osaka, has thousands of works. Prints make up a large portion of the collection.

Visiting Art Park connects you to this history. The park embodies art and nature. It is a testament to Osaka’s cultural vibrancy. The park stands as a reminder of the Expo’s lasting impact on Osaka.
