“Second Ignatius” is quite the nickname. That is what they called Pedro Arrupe. And it’s his name that graces this building before us: Arrupe Hall.
Welcome to Arrupe Hall at Sogang University. This building stands as a testament to a remarkable man.
Arrupe Hall was completed in October 2002. It’s more than just classrooms and offices. It’s a hub of activity within the university.
Arrupe Hall consists of a basement. It has 11 ground floors. The total area spans 8462 square meters.
Within these walls, you’ll find the Admissions Office. The University Museum also calls this place home. So does the Institute for International Culture and Education. Even the Alumni Association has a space here. Need a bank? There’s one here. Planning a wedding? Arrupe Hall even houses a wedding hall and a restaurant.
Now, who was Pedro Arrupe? He was the 28th Superior General of the Society of Jesus. That explains the “Jesuit” connection you see around Sogang. His friend, Vincent O’Keefe, called him “Second Ignatius”. This was because of Arrupe’s work after the Second Vatican Council.
Arrupe Hall is also where many language classes take place. The Korean language teachers have their offices here. Foreign language students frequent this building.
You can enter Arrupe Hall in a couple of ways. The first floor has a convenience store. You can find a Woori Bank and ATMs here. These ATMs usually work with foreign cards.
Alternatively, try entering from the fourth floor. Climb the stairs near the South Gate. Take a left near the bike rack. From there, follow the narrow stairs. You will find Arrupe Hall on your left.
Before we move on I’d like to remind you that to head back to the Main Gate from Arrupe Hall, exit the building from the fourth floor. Take a left and go down the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs, you’ll see the tennis courts. Pass the courts, and you’ll see a tiny park area with a water fountain. Pass that, and you’re back at the front gate.
Arrupe Hall isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant center of learning and activity. It honors a man who left a lasting impact on the Society of Jesus. As you explore Sogang University remember Arrupe Hall and its story. It’s a place where language, culture, and community converge.
