Once, this very spot might have echoed with the footsteps of Bornholm’s earliest farmers. Welcome to Arnager Skyttegard Stenkiste. This megalithic tomb whispers tales of Neolithic Bornholm. Imagine farmers who arrived around 3900 B.C.E. These people brought new ideas. They knew how to grow crops. They raised domesticated animals. Cows, sheep, pigs and goats changed the island.

These farmers came from southeastern Sweden. They were part of the Funnel Beaker culture. Contact was strong. It provided Bornholm with flint axes and tools. These tools came from Sweden in dug-out canoes. There are no natural flint resources on Bornholm. Axes were vital. Farmers used them to clear forests. The slash-and-burn technique transformed the island’s landscape slowly.

The first farmers introduced pottery vessels. They used polished stone axes. They created flint tools and saddle querns. These querns ground grains. People lived in large rectangular houses. Houses could be 44 meters long. They were made of wooden beams. Hazel wicker and daub filled the spaces. Thatch likely covered the roofs. Examples have been found across the island.

Around 3500 BCE, settlements became more permanent. They were located on the southeastern part of the island. These settlements were near fertile soils. Near these settlements, people built gateway enclosures. Vasagard and Rispebjerg were such places. Ditches were used from 3500-3300 BCE. Rituals, feasts, and burials probably took place there. Bones were exhumed. Later, they were reburied in long barrows.

From 2900-2800 BCE, elongated palisades were constructed. They surrounded areas with up to six rows. These palisades could be 1.5 km long. There is evidence of timber circles within these enclosures. Some circles were ten meters in diameter. Perhaps these were temples or altars. Excavations found burned grains. They also found flint axes and bones. These items were deposited in postholes as part of rituals. Over 300 ornamented stones have been found. They are called sunstones. These have stylized engravings. They depict the sun, spider webs, and field crops.

Vasagard has revealed the oldest rock carvings in Scandinavia. This tradition started nearly a thousand years earlier than assumed. The Neolithic era saw new burial architecture. Megalithic tombs rose across the landscape. Court tombs, portal tombs, passage tombs and wedge tombs marked this era. The Arnager Skyttegard Stenkiste represents this monumental shift.

This stone cist stood as a symbol. It marked a community’s connection to ancestors. It connected them to the land. Imagine the gatherings held here. Picture the rituals performed. Hear the whispers of ancient prayers. The Arnager Skyttegard Stenkiste is more than just stones. It is a portal to Bornholm’s distant past.

Today, as you stand before the Arnager Skyttegard Stenkiste, consider the echoes of Neolithic life. Think about the farmers, their rituals, and their connection to this land. This monument has stood for millennia. It remains a testament to human ingenuity and spiritual yearning. Let the stones speak. Let the past come alive.
