Architect really wanted to build a church? That’s the question many ask upon first seeing the Arminiusmarkthalle. The elaborate archways resemble a basilica. Floral decorations adorn the cast-iron pillars. Gothic-style bay windows punctuate a window gallery. But instead of worshippers, you see traders bustling below.

Welcome to the Arminiusmarkthalle. It is a chapter of Berlin’s colorful market history unfolding right before you. Opened in 1891, it quickly became a vital part of the up-and-coming commercial district of Moabit. The city planning council of Blankenstein designed it. Modern iron constructions allowed the market hall to be built in just over a year.

Imagine this space filled with 425 stands. They were spread across 10 sales aisles. The Arminiusmarkthalle offered a modern shopping experience for its time. Sadly, World War II heavily damaged it. It was rebuilt in the 1950s. Then, in 1990, the facade was restored. A more extensive refurbishment followed in 1996. It brought back many of the historical design features. The building is now under national trust protection.

Today, the Arminiusmarkthalle combines nostalgia with new ideas. Fresh food abounds. International handicrafts tempt you. Cafés and bars offer respite. Delicatessens display culinary treasures. Bakeries perfume the air with warm scents. Fish shops gleam with their silvery wares. You can also find meat, sausages, cheese and dairy products. Fruit, vegetables and juices add vibrant colors. And of course, ice cream and sweets offer sweet indulgence.

The Arminiusmarkthalle is more than just a shopping destination. It is a place for cultural exchange. It is a social hub. It hosts temporary market stalls. It is a versatile meeting place for the community.

Are you hungry? The farm shop offers mainly Austrian cuisine. Schnitzel, Käsespätzle and goulash are staples. Regional and international wines complement the food. Try the Markthalle’s own label wines. These include “Black & White” or the “Glashaus Collection.” They are exclusively available here. The cocktail menu features Berlin spirits producers. Even the beer comes from small local breweries.

Brunch on Saturdays is a special treat. A prosecco butler pampers you. You can enjoy delicacies straight from the market stalls. Live piano music sets the mood.

For fans of American Southern cuisine, there is Smoke & Barrel. Pulled pork, beef brisket and spare ribs are smoked in-house. They are served with fresh coleslaw and creamed corn.

Seafood lovers should head to the fish shop. Here, you can sample various fish & chips. Or have fresh fish fried to order.

The Arminiusmarkthalle is open Monday to Saturday. Most stalls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Some of the restaurants and culinary stalls stay open later. But on Sundays, the market hall is closed.

In the evening, the Arminiusmarkthalle transforms. It becomes a lively venue for activities and events. The Arminiusmarkthalle is a place where tradition meets modern life. It is a testament to Berlin’s resilience and its vibrant spirit.
