In 1915, a beacon of hope arose amidst tragedy: the Armenian Memorial Congregational Church. Here in Watertown, Massachusetts, a small group of Armenian Protestants, survivors of the Armenian Genocide, established this church. They named it Cilician Armenian Memorial Church, a tribute to their lost homeland and a memorial to the victims. These seven men, originally from Marash, Turkey, had fled their home seeking refuge in America. They found solace in their shared faith and began meeting for Bible studies in the South End of Boston. With the support of American missionaries, this small group grew into a congregation. The missionaries even offered the Massachusetts Congregational Church Headquarters conference room as a meeting place. The church’s name was later simplified to Armenian Memorial Church in 1959. But the core values remained: faith, community, and remembrance. The church continues to be a vibrant center for the Armenian community in Watertown. They offer Sunday services, Sunday school for children, and a youth group for teenagers. It’s a place where generations gather, where the old and new intertwine, and where the spirit of resilience lives on. The Armenian Memorial Congregational Church stands as a testament to the enduring strength of faith and the importance of community in the face of adversity.
