Gazing up at the Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs, imagine the dreams of a community taking shape. The Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs wasn’t simply built. It was envisioned by a group of Armenian families living on Long Island. They longed for a sanctuary, a place where their traditions and faith could flourish. The Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs stands as a testament to their vision. This dream began to solidify in 1954 with the formation of a Building Committee. Three individuals, Artin Aslanian, Dadour Dadourian, and Poozant Piranian, made significant contributions to purchase the land. In June 1954, the church officially became a chartered institution. Their first priest-in-charge, Father Torkom Manoogian, guided the community. The Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs was consecrated in 1958. Fundraising throughout the 1950s and 1960s made its construction possible. A nearby parish house provided housing for the pastor. Later, a school and community center was built to house the Sunday School and Armenian Language School. Now, the Holy Martyrs Armenian Day School, an accredited elementary school, is part of the complex. Many groups support the Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs in its mission. The church continues to be a vibrant hub of Armenian culture and faith. A Sunday school opened in 1967, offering free instruction in Armenian language, literature, history, and music to children of the Armenian community. This tradition continues today within the church grounds, enriching the community’s connection to its heritage. The Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs has seen many pastors serve the community since 1955. These clergymen have played vital roles in nurturing the spiritual life of the parish. Today, the Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs stands as a beacon of faith. It represents the dedication and perseverance of the Armenian community in Bayside.
