Pause for a moment and consider this: Arlington, Massachusetts, wasn’t always known by that name. Once called Menotomy, Arlington played a crucial role in early American history. Arlington seamlessly blends its rich past with modern suburban living. It creates a charming atmosphere.

Arlington was established as a village under the name Menotomy in 1635. Imagine the early settlers arriving here. They were drawn by the promise of fertile land and abundant resources. According to the Sagamore of the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag, Menotomy means “the place that smells”. The name likely reflects the tidal nature of the Mystic River. It also highlights the abundant Indigenous fisheries and planting grounds in the area. Fish was used as fertilizer.

In 1637 Captain George Cooke, a British Army officer, erected the first mill along Mill Brook. Six more mills quickly followed. Mill Brook’s swift-running water powered these early industries. Farmers from surrounding areas brought their grain here to be ground into flour. Arlington was a thriving mill town.

Arlington played a prominent role on the first day of the American Revolution April 19, 1775. Minutemen from surrounding towns converged on Menotomy. They ambushed the British on their retreat from Concord and Lexington. More than one-half of that fateful day’s casualties were suffered in the short distance from Foot of the Rocks to Spy Pond. This makes Arlington a key location in the story of American independence.

The town officially changed its name to Arlington on May 1 1867. This celebration was marked by a 100-gun salute bell ringing and patriotic colors. The new name paid homage to the war heroes buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. This name change signifies a respect for American values and sacrifice.

Another interesting fact about Arlington is its connection to “Uncle Sam”. The man for whom the American icon was named, Samuel Wilson, was born in Menotomy in 1766. Wilson started a meat-packing business in Troy N.Y. He supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812. Soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s”. The local newspaper picked up on the story. “Uncle Sam” eventually gained widespread acceptance as the nickname for the U.S. federal government.

Arlington also boasts the first continuous and free children’s library in the nation. In 1835 Doctor Ebenezer Learned left money in his will. This was to establish a juvenile section at the Robbins Library. Arlington has always valued education.

Today Arlington is a vibrant suburb known for its strong community. It has top-notch public schools and local businesses. The Minuteman Bikeway is a testament to the town’s commitment to green spaces and outdoor activities.

From its early days as Menotomy to its present-day charm Arlington has a unique story. Its historical significance its role in the American Revolution and its contributions to American culture make it a special place. As you explore Arlington remember the stories etched into its streets and landscapes.
