Opened in 2006, Arleta High School stands proudly on Van Nuys Boulevard. It quickly became a cornerstone of the Arleta community in Los Angeles. The first classes at Arleta High started with grades 9 and 10. The school added 11th grade in 2007 and 12th grade the following year. The very first graduating class celebrated their commencement in June 2009, marking a significant milestone for the young institution. Arleta High School isn’t just one school. It’s actually three smaller learning communities under one roof. These “small schools” focus on Social Justice, Science, Math and Related Technologies (known as SMART), and Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA). This unique structure allows students to delve deeper into their chosen fields of interest. Arleta High School adopted block scheduling. Students attend four 82-minute classes daily, completing a year’s worth of material in just sixteen weeks. This intensive approach fosters focused learning and allows for a deeper exploration of subjects. This innovative approach to education contributed to Arleta High School’s recognition as a California Gold Ribbon School. A unique aspect of Arleta High’s curriculum is the student portfolio requirement. Throughout their four years, students compile a portfolio showcasing their academic achievements. This portfolio isn’t just a collection of assignments. It’s a testament to their growth and learning, a key to their graduation and participation in the commencement ceremony. Even transfer students are expected to contribute. They write essays summarizing their accomplishments from previous schools and continue building their portfolios at Arleta High. Every Tuesday at Arleta High School transforms into a “dress for success” day. Students don professional attire to prepare for future careers. This practice not only instills professionalism but also offers tangible rewards. Participating students receive higher participation grades, priority lunch access, and certificates of achievement. Beyond academics, Arleta High School has a vibrant athletics program. As part of the East Valley League of the CIF Los Angeles City Section, the Mustangs compete in a variety of sports. Fall brings football, girls’ volleyball, and cross country. Winter sports include basketball and soccer. Spring sees track and field, softball, baseball, boys’ volleyball, and cheerleading take center stage. The Arleta High School dance team keeps the spirit alive year-round with their performances and rigorous training. Arleta High School’s influence extends beyond its campus walls. The school has served as a filming location for popular television shows like “On My Block” and “Freeridge”. This brush with Hollywood adds another layer of intrigue to the school’s story.
