From a humble rubble heap to Berlin’s highest point, the Arkenberge has quite the story to tell. Here we stand, at the foot of a man-made mountain, a testament to Berlin’s resilience and ever-evolving landscape. The Arkenberge, once a modest natural hill ridge, now dominates the skyline of the Pankow borough, in the municipality of Blankenfelde. The nearby settlement, also named Arkenberge, took its name from this original chain of small hills. In 1984, a transformation began. East of the settlement, on a 36-hectare site, a designated area became the repository for Berlin’s building waste. For years, the rubble piled higher and higher, reshaping the landscape. This continued until 1998, when the initial dumping ceased. However, the story doesn’t end there. In 1999, more construction waste was brought in, not to simply discard, but to sculpt and recultivate the landfill. The vision was ambitious: to create a hill with two distinct viewing platforms, separated by a subtle saddle. The Arkenberge isn’t simply a pile of rubble; it’s a carefully constructed peak. Fast forward to 2015, a survey revealed a surprising fact. The Arkenberge, at 120.7 meters above sea level, had surpassed the Teufelsberg to become the highest point in all of Berlin. To commemorate this, a glacial erratic, a boulder transported by glaciers long ago, was placed at the summit. It bears an inscription, marking its significance as the pinnacle of Berlin. It’s important to remember that while the Arkenberge now claims the title of highest point, the highest *natural* point remains the Großer Müggelberg, standing at 114.7 meters. The Arkenberge, a symbol of urban transformation, opened to the public in 2019. It offers panoramic views of the city, a unique perspective born from the remnants of Berlin’s past. From discarded rubble to a celebrated landmark, the Arkenberge stands as a reminder that even from the debris of the past, something remarkable can emerge.
