The Arequipa zoo is officially named Parque Albergue Zoo Mundo. It is located in Paucarpata. That is about 10 kilometers from Arequipa’s city center. Dr. José María Granados Soria founded it December 5 1998.
Arequipa zoo is home to over 340 animals. These animals represent 88 different species. Many were seized from hunters and traders. Others were abandoned. The Arequipa zoo provides these animals with veterinary care. It also gives them food and appropriate living conditions. They cannot return to their natural habitats.
The Arequipa zoo spans three hectares. Here you will find the spectacled bear. This is a protected species that is close to extinction. Lions recovered from a circus also live here. You can also see Peruvian otters and various monkey species.
The penguin exhibit attracts kids and adults. The aquarium has exotic fish. Piranhas and electric eels swim here. You can also see motor rays and needle fish. Arequipa zoo is special. It has mineral water. This water helps keep penguins and seagulls healthy. These marine species need salts.
Arequipa zoo also houses condors and ostriches. Foxes, pumas and parrots live here too. You will also find caimans and turtles. Arequipa zoo is the largest in southern Peru.
Visiting Arequipa zoo supports a good cause. Entrance fees help fund the zoo’s operation. Adults pay eight soles. Children pay four soles. People over 70 enter for free. Volunteer firefighters also get free admission. People with disabilities with a CONADIS card also enter free.
