Ever wondered where Sicilian nobles once entertained royalty? That place is Arenella Small Marina. It’s more than just a marina. Arenella Small Marina tells a tale of tuna, turrets, and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Arenella was once a fishing village. It sat at the foot of Monte Pellegrino. Now, it’s part of Palermo but retains its charm. You will find fishing boats. It is no longer isolated.

The bay reveals its history. See the remains of a tuna fishing establishment. Spot the Palazzina Quattro Pizzi. It is a neo-gothic palace with four turrets.

The Florio family shaped Arenella’s story. They arrived from Calabria. They built a vast commercial empire. Their interests included tuna fishing. In 1830, Vincenzo Florio Snr bought the tonnara at Arenella. Carlo Giachery restructured it. He added the Palazzina Quattro Pizzi.

By the late 19th century, Palermo was a fashionable capital. Ignazio Florio and his wife Franca were at its heart. They hosted royalty and cultural figures. The Palazzina Quattro Pizzi became an entertainment venue. Legend says the Tsarina of Russia loved it. She supposedly had a similar building built in St. Petersburg named ‘Rinella’.

Later, Vincenzo Florio lived in the Palazzina. He lived with his second wife. He is known for founding the Targa Florio Rally. It is a famous car race.

The Tonnara Florio closed in the early 20th century. Tuna disappeared from these waters. The complex is now an entertainment center. It has a concert venue and restaurant.

Arenella Marina itself is on Sicily’s northern coast. It faces the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Gulf of Palermo. You can contact the marina via VHF11. Arenella Marina is also known as Il Porto di Arenella. Or, it is known as Port of Arenella.
