Faddis was the architect. Richard Bradshaw was the structural engineer. Trepte Construction Company was the general contractor.
Pechanga Arena has seen many names over the years. It was the San Diego International Sports Arena from 1966 to 1970. From 1970 to 2005, it was known as the San Diego Sports Arena again. For a short time, it was the iPayOne Center. Then it became the Valley View Casino Center. Finally, it became Pechanga Arena in 2018.
Pechanga Arena can hold a lot of people. For boxing, it can seat 16,100. For basketball, it holds 14,500. Ice hockey games can have 12,920 fans. It is consistently rated as a top facility in California. Pechanga Arena is often in the top 5 in the US and top 10 worldwide. This is for venues with 10,001 to 15,000 seats.
The San Diego Gulls were the first tenants of Pechanga Arena. They were part of the Western Hockey League. The arena opened on November 17, 1966. The Gulls won their first game against the Seattle Totems. The San Diego State Aztecs men’s basketball team also played here. They used Pechanga Arena until 1997.
The San Diego Rockets of the NBA called Pechanga Arena home too. Their first game was on October 14, 1967. They narrowly lost to the St. Louis Hawks. In 1971, Pechanga Arena hosted the NBA All-Star Game.
Music history echoes within these walls as well. Jimi Hendrix played here. He recorded a 13-minute version of “Red House”. Elvis Presley graced the stage twice. In 2023, the Kroenke Group became the chief investor. They plan to redevelop the site. The proposal includes demolishing Pechanga Arena. A new 16,000-seat arena will be built. There will also be housing units and a park.
