Perhaps you’ve heard echoes of roaring crowds that once filled this very space. We are standing before the impressive Arena Națională. This is more than just a stadium. It’s a stage for dreams and a symbol of Romanian pride.

Arena Națională officially opened its doors on September 6 2011. This opening featured a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier match. Romania faced France in front of 49137 fans. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Before this magnificent structure stood the original National Stadium. It was demolished between 2007 and 2008 to make way for something grander. The construction phase wasn’t without its hurdles. There were controversies over costs and delays. Yet, the vision pressed on.

Designed by Gerkan Marg and Partners the stadium was built by Max Bögl and Astaldi. The Arena Națională boasts a retractable roof. This roof can open or close in just 15 minutes.

With a seating capacity of 55634 the Arena Națională is the largest stadium in Romania. It features 3600 VIP seats and ample space for the press. The stadium also provides 2100 parking spaces.

Arena Națională holds a UEFA Category Four status. It hosted the 2012 UEFA Europa League final. Atlético Madrid defeated Athletic Bilbao in front of over 52000 spectators. The stadium was also a venue for UEFA Euro 2020. It hosted four games including a Round of 16 match.

But football isn’t the only spectacle here. The Arena Națională has welcomed world-renowned artists. Metallica Guns N’ Roses and Ed Sheeran have all graced its stage.

The highest audience for a football match was at an exhibition game. Romania’s Golden Generation faced the World Stars team. The Golden Generation won 3-2 with 54967 spectators.

The Arena Națională is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a place where memories are made. It’s a place where the passion of sports and music unite. As you stand here take a moment to imagine the roar of the crowd. Feel the energy of the performances. The Arena Națională stands as a testament to Bucharest’s vibrant spirit.
