This sprawling plot of land, nestled in the urban fabric of Milan, was once home to the Società Italiana Serie Acetica Sintetica – SISAS. Founded in 1947, SISAS was a leading producer of acetylene, a vital component in numerous industrial processes. The bustling factory, with its towering chimneys belching out plumes of smoke, was a symbol of Milan’s industrial might.
However, as fortunes changed, so did the fate of SISAS. By the early 2000s, the company was burdened by debt and faced environmental challenges due to its chemical production. The once-proud factory was mothballed, leaving behind a legacy of contamination and rusting machinery. But the legacy of SISAS wasn’t only about industrial prowess and environmental woes – it was also one of innovation and change.
The site, now known as Area Ex SISAS, has since been undergoing a complex transformation. The contaminated land has been cleaned, and the remnants of the industrial past have been meticulously dismantled.
