Seven thousand two hundred stone blocks. That’s how many it took to build this magnificent Arco de Córdoba. Can you imagine the sheer effort?

The Arco de Córdoba stands before you a testament to Córdoba’s rich history and cultural identity. It’s more than just an archway. It’s a gateway to the city’s past. It’s an emblem of Cordoban pride.

The brainchild of Intendente Donato Latella Frías this impressive structure was born from a unique idea. While imprisoned in 1930 Latella sketched the design. He envisioned two towers mirroring those on Córdoba’s city crest joined by an elegant arch. Years later as Intendente he commissioned the project from architect Fernando Cabanillas.

Construction began on June 25 1942. The Arco was inaugurated a year later on July 6 1943. This date commemorated the anniversary of Córdoba’s founding. The original design approved by Latella bore the signature of Ingeniero Olmedo. The design is eclectic a blend of styles. The two towers are reminiscent of Spanish medieval architecture with strong Romanesque influences. Each tower boasts six meters in diameter and soars to a height of 18.6 meters. They contain four floors each. The spheres topping the towers symbolize the world or the universe.

Originally cars passed beneath the Arco. A sign welcomed visitors to Córdoba. In 1978 for the FIFA World Cup the surrounding area was renovated to create Plaza de la República. Now drivers must circle the Arco.

For years the Arco housed a tourism office and a highway police station. In 2014 the city council declared the Arco a cultural site. It’s now home to the Museo Arco de Córdoba (MARCO). The museum showcases Córdoba’s history from its founding to the 20th century. You’ll find photographs documenting the Arco’s construction.
