Did you know that the Garden City Kleefeld was planned to have around 600 houses? We are standing in front of a remarkable piece of Hannover’s architectural heritage the Architectural heritage group Garden City Kleefeld. This planned garden city began construction in the winter of 1927/28. It arose on the grounds of the former Kleefeld manor. The streets here were thoughtfully laid out in a north-south direction. The designers cleverly avoided extensively disrupting the main east-west thoroughfare Kirchröder road.

The initial vision for the Garden City Kleefeld encompassed three basic house types. Each house was designed for at least five rooms and boasted at least 150 square meters of living space. The homes were arranged in clusters of two four or six. Building sections were designed to offset one another. This clever design softened the otherwise stark block effect. Brick arches originally connected the houses. They added a sense of spaciousness between the rows. However these arches were later removed to enlarge living spaces. This unfortunately altered the original design significantly.

Today the Garden City Kleefeld retains a unique charm. It’s a beautiful residential area popular with Hannover residents. It’s a testament to early 20th-century urban planning. It demonstrates a thoughtful approach to combining residential needs with a pleasant environment. The Garden City Kleefeld’s history is a story of both realization and adjustment. The original ambitious plans didn’t entirely come to fruition. Yet the remaining buildings stand as a testament to Hannover’s architectural legacy. The Garden City Kleefeld represents a unique blend of planning ideals and practical adaptation. It continues to thrive as a desirable and attractive place to live. Take a moment to admire the architecture. Reflect on the history of this unique neighborhood in Hannover.
