Imagine stepping into a time machine and being transported to the turn of the 20th century. This is the world of Arch Street Lofts, a transformation of an iconic building known as the Pitcairn Building. This historic structure, a perfect blend of steel and brick, offers a glimpse into Philadelphia’s industrial and architectural past. The original architect, G.W. and W.D Hewitt, designed it in 1901 and later built the exquisite Bellevue-Stratford Hotel. It was the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company that gave it its name, with its founder, John Pitcairn, at the helm. This building, measuring a commanding 74 feet wide and 172 feet deep, was once a hub of bustling industry.

The building witnessed diverse tenants, from clothing manufacturers to even a skating rink and bowling alley on the top floors. H. Daroff and Sons, the building’s owner from 1923 onwards, was a major force in the local clothing industry. A Jewish immigrant from Russia, Daroff capitalized on the growing demand for ready-to-wear clothing, producing a staggering 3.6 million suits annually. The building became a heart of Philadelphia’s clothing industry, which later shifted to the more mechanized manufacturing of the 1880s. This triggered a movement of sweat shops into loft-style buildings, sparking labor disputes and demanding better working conditions. The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA) was at the forefront of these battles, achieving their aims after negotiating contracts with manufacturers.

The Arch Street Lofts, however, underwent a profound transformation in 2004. A $22 million renovation project breathed new life into this landmark, converting it into luxury condominiums. Today, as you stand before Arch Street Lofts, envision it in its former glory, a dynamic space reflecting the hustle and bustle of the city’s industrial heritage. It is a reminder of the city’s remarkable past, of the sweat and toil of skilled workers, and the fight for fairer working conditions that shaped Philadelphia into the dynamic city it is today. The Arch Street Lofts, with their elegant design and charming, airy interiors, now offer a glimpse into the city’s past, inviting you to step inside and experience the true pulse of Philadelphia’s history.
