It commemorates Cambodia’s liberation from French rule in 1953. The design, a graceful lotus-shaped stupa, draws inspiration from ancient Khmer architecture. This design can be seen at Banteay Srei and other historical sites. It was conceived by the esteemed architect Vann Molyvann, under the guidance of Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Every year, on November 9th, the Arc de Triomphe becomes the heart of national celebrations. A ceremonial flame is lit, often by a royal family member or a high-ranking official. Floral tributes adorn the steps, a vibrant display of respect and remembrance. The monument also serves as a memorial to Cambodia’s war dead, adding a layer of solemnity to its significance.
