In the heart of Almindingen, a hidden gem awaits: the Arboretet. What began as a forester’s dream in the 1930s has blossomed into a captivating collection of trees from around the world. Arboretet was the brainchild of forester Valdemar Sejer. He envisioned a living tapestry of trees and shrubs that thrived along the 55th parallel, mirroring Bornholm’s unique latitude. He sought to introduce species uncommon to the island, creating a vibrant contrast to the existing flora. The Arboretet showcases over 100 different types of trees and shrubs. Originally, Sejer focused on plants found along the 55th parallel, adding an interesting layer of geographical connection to the collection. After Sejer’s time, the Arboretet fell into disrepair, a slumbering beauty waiting to be reawakened. In the 1980s, this hidden sanctuary was rediscovered and revitalized. The revitalization expanded the collection. The northern part of the garden now boasts trees from North America, while the southern part showcases the delicate beauty of Asian species, particularly from Japan and Korea. As you wander through the Arboretet’s network of paths, take a moment to appreciate the small lakes that dot the landscape, adding a touch of serenity to this botanical haven. Covering 4 to 5 hectares, the Arboretet offers a tranquil escape. Look for the informative posters near selected trees, offering insights into their unique characteristics and origins. And for those arriving by car, convenient parking is available right next to the entrance. The Arboretet in Almindingen is more than just a collection of trees.
