Across the sprawling plains, Arapahoe County unfolds. It whispers tales of resilience and transformation. Arapahoe County is Colorado’s first county. Its vast 806 square miles stretch from Denver’s western edge to the Kansas border. Originally, Arapahoe County encompassed almost half of present-day Colorado. It was a land teeming with possibility, where the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes once roamed.

In 1861, as Kansas gained statehood, Colorado emerged as a territory. Arapahoe County stood as one of its seventeen foundational counties. Its unique shape, a narrow strip extending eastward, reflected the practice of granting counties both plains and foothill access. This ensured access to vital water resources for mining and irrigation. Even without direct foothill access, Arapahoe County benefited from the life-giving streams flowing down from the mountains.

The early history of Arapahoe County is marked by the intrepid spirit of trappers and prospectors. In the 1820s, the pursuit of beaver pelts drew trappers to the region. The 1830s and 40s saw a shift to buffalo hides. The first trading post along the South Platte River, built on Cherry Creek in 1832, marked a significant step in the area’s development. This area was then part of Arapahoe County.

Then came the gold rush of 1848. Prospectors, en route to California, paused in Colorado to test the waters, literally. They struck gold near present-day Englewood, where Dry Creek meets the Platte River. This discovery, initially known as Placer Camp or The Mexican Diggings, ignited interest in the area. Another pivotal discovery occurred where Cherry Creek converges with the Platte River, giving rise to a settlement that would become Denver. Denver served as the seat of Arapahoe County until 1902 when the county underwent a series of divisions, shaping the Denver metro area we know today.

Arapahoe County is a land of contrasts. It’s a blend of rural tranquility and urban dynamism. While three-quarters of the county retains its rural character, dotted with wheat farms and ranches, the western portion has embraced urbanization. The Martin Marietta plant, the Denver Technological Center, Centennial Airport, and Greenwood Plaza all stand as testaments to the county’s industrial and commercial growth. These complexes house offices of globally recognized corporations, drawing new settlers to the thriving communities of western Arapahoe County. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of the past mingling with the pulse of the present. From the whispers of the wind across the plains to the hum of modern industry, Arapahoe County’s story continues to unfold. It is a story written in the land itself, a testament to the enduring human spirit and the transformative power of time.
