Hidden within the embrace of the Neva Delta lies Aptekarsky Island. It’s a place of intriguing contrasts. Aptekarsky Island whispers tales of Tsarist decrees and scientific breakthroughs. In 1714, Peter the Great envisioned this island. He saw it as the heart of medicinal herb cultivation. He decreed it to be the headquarters of the Medical Clerical Office and the Main Pharmacy. Thus, Aptekarsky Island, meaning “Pharmacy Island”, earned its name. Initially a hub for cultivating medicinal herbs for the city, Aptekarsky Island’s southeastern side housed a dedicated garden. This garden would eventually blossom into the renowned Saint Petersburg Botanical Garden and later give rise to the Komarov Botanical Institute. Aptekarsky Island wasn’t solely devoted to plants. It also became home to Russia’s first medical device laboratory. This laboratory evolved into the Krasnogvardeets firm, still operating in St. Petersburg today. During the reigns of Paul I and Alexander I, Aptekarsky Island transformed. It became a favored retreat for Russian aristocracy, who graced the island with their country estates. The 20th century ushered in a wave of industrialization. Apartment buildings sprung up to accommodate the influx of workers. Among these new structures were architectural gems designed by prominent Russian architects like Vladimir Shuko and Fyodor Lidval. Shuko’s work includes the Russian State Library in Moscow, and Lidval’s portfolio boasts the Hotel Astoria in St. Petersburg. Aptekarsky Island is a testament to the passage of time. It continues to house key institutions like the Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University and the Saint-Petersburg State Chemical Pharmaceutical Academy. The Experimental Medicine Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Science and the St. Petersburg Hydro Meteorological Center also call this island home. Aptekarsky Island. A place where the whispers of medicinal herbs mingle with the hum of scientific innovation. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine within the vibrant tapestry of St. Petersburg.
