“A village-style design” encapsulates the essence of Applewood. Here in Swords near Dublin Applewood began its story around 2002. Property developer Gerry Gannon had a vision. He wanted to create a unique suburban area.
Applewood won the Best Urban Village award at the National Tidy Towns competition in 2006. This award highlights its design and community feel.
Applewood is located northwest of Swords’ center. The Glen Ellan Distributor Road acts as the main access point. It connects Applewood to the Balheary and Rathbeale Roads. The South Bank Glen Ellan and Sandford Wood estates sit on the road’s south side. Applewood Main Street and the Thornleigh Estate are located to the north.
Public transportation is readily available in Applewood. Dublin Bus routes 41c 41x and 43 serve the area. The Swords Express service also stops here. These routes connect Applewood to Dublin City Centre and other key locations.
The Broadmeadow Linear Park offers a green space north of Applewood. Fingal County Council plans to expand the park. This expansion will link it to Balheary Park and the proposed Swords Regional Park.
Applewood has three primary schools. Gaelscoil Bhrian Bóroimhe Swords Educate Together National School and Thornleigh Educate Together National School educate the community’s children. Gaelscoil Bhrian Bóroimhe and Swords Educate Together share a campus. The Applewood Community Centre is also here. Thornleigh Educate Together National School opened in 2012.
In the late 1990s developers acquired land known as ‘The Mains’. It was predominantly farmland. The increasing population created a demand for housing. Planning permission was granted in 1998. Construction started soon after.
Applewood Village was designed to be a self-contained community. It features a central plaza shops and essential amenities. Applewood’s name connects to its agricultural past. Apple orchards were once a prominent feature.
Today Applewood Village has over 10000 residents. It has expanded with new housing options and community facilities. You can find a supermarket pharmacy restaurants and cafes here.
A strong sense of community defines Applewood Village. The residents association organizes regular events. Summer festivals Christmas markets and community clean-up days enhance community spirit.

The Iveagh Trust opened the Applewood Estate in June 2005. It was their first venture outside Dublin City. The development includes 109 homes apartments and townhouses. Iveagh Trust staff live and work in Applewood. They provide estate management services to residents. The residents’ committee discusses issues with the Director of Housing.
Applewood Main Street offers various shops and services. You can find Eurospar a butcher a pub and a medical center here. There is also a hardware shop and coffee shops. Other shops include Applewood Gallery Applewood DIY & Hardware and Foleys Pharmacy.
