The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium opened its gates in 1922. It quickly became a landmark. It is also known as Leoforos Alexandras Stadium. The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium was innovative for its time. It was the first in Greece with a stand. It also boasted floodlights and a grass pitch.
Panathinaikos is one of Greece’s most successful clubs. They have won over 40 trophies. In 1963-64, they had an undefeated season. Ferenc Puskás led them to the European Cup final in 1971. Unfortunately, they lost to Ajax. Panathinaikos was founded in 1908. It was originally a right-wing club. It catered to Athens’ socialites.
The stadium is named after Apostolos Nikolaidis. He was a president, official, and athlete for the historic club.
The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium isn’t just for football. Underneath Gates 6 and 7 is a hidden gem. It’s an old basketball arena. It’s nicknamed the “Indian Tomb”. Opponents felt claustrophobic playing there. Today, Panathinaikos’ basketball team plays in the Olympic Indoor Hall. The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium also has a boxing ring. Panathinaikos played in the Olympic Stadium of Athens for many years. The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium needed frequent renovations. It didn’t meet UEFA standards. From 1984 to 2000, they played in the Olympic Stadium. There was one exception. After five seasons back, renovations were needed again. From 2018 to 2020, they played in the Olympic Stadium again.
A new stadium is planned in Votanikos. Construction began in April 2023. It was supposed to be ready in 2026. The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium will be demolished if it is completed.
The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium has a record attendance of 29,665. This was during a game against Bayern Munich in 1967.
The Pavlos and Thanasis Giannakopoulos Indoor Hall is under the stadium. It opened in 1959. It was the first indoor hall in Greece. It seats 1,500 people. It gained the nickname “The Indian’s Tomb” due to its hot atmosphere.
