The first American church emerged in Lewis County, New York, in 1847. Benedict Weyeneth, sent by Froehlich, established it. The church expanded, primarily in the Midwest. Many congregations drew members from Amish and Mennonite communities. Interestingly, although sometimes called the “New Amish,” these believers preferred the term “Evangelical Baptist.” In 1917, they unified under the name “Apostolic Christian Church.” The church experienced divisions over time. One significant split occurred in the early 1900s. This was due to disagreements about European customs. Another schism happened in 1932.
