Was it always this peaceful here? Looking at the Apopka Schoolhouse Plaque today, it’s hard to imagine the hustle and bustle of a school year. This unassuming plaque marks the spot where Apopka’s dedication to education took root. In 1885, the very first public schoolhouse in Apopka was built right here. Can you picture it? A modest, three-room structure, echoing with the voices of Apopka’s children eager to learn. This schoolhouse stood beside the original Apopka Baptist Church, just west of the area known as the “Old Church Cemetery.” Interestingly, the Reverend Lucian Drury, who led the Apopka Baptist Church, also served as one of the teachers, even becoming the principal in 1889. Sadly, this chapter of Apopka’s educational journey met a fiery end in 1891 when the schoolhouse burned down. This paved the way for a new era, with a new schoolhouse built on Fourth Street, later renamed Main Street. But the Apopka Schoolhouse Plaque reminds us that the pursuit of knowledge found its first home in Apopka right here, in this very spot.
