Beneath the California sun, Apollo Park stands as a testament to Downey’s unique history. Apollo Park wasn’t always known by this name. It was once called Imperial Park. The name change, a generation ago, directly reflects Downey’s pivotal role in the Apollo Space Program. Right here in Downey, at the former North American Aviation plant, later North American Rockwell and eventually Boeing, over 25,000 people worked on the Apollo Space Program. This was the birthplace of much of America’s space technology from the 1950s to the early 1990s. The Downey Historical Society, located within Apollo Park, offers a deeper dive into this history. Inside, you’ll find photos, maps, and objects that span over 120 years of Downey’s story. There’s even a small historic house from 1887, the Dismukes House, preserved on the grounds. The society’s president, Bob Thompson, a lifelong Downey resident and aerospace industry veteran, has dedicated himself to preserving the city’s heritage. Across from Apollo Park is another landmark, the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. One of the largest rehabilitation hospitals in the United States, it has served the community for over 125 years.
