Tucked away on the eastern slope of Yasaka Jinja Shrine and Maruyama Park sits Anyoji Temple. It’s a hidden gem that even many Japanese tourists overlook. Anyoji Temple may appear unassuming now, but its history is deeply intertwined with the development of Japanese Buddhism. Anyoji Temple was initially built by Saicho between 782 and 806 at the behest of Emperor Kanmu. The temple experienced a period of decline during the Heian period (794-1185). It was revived in 1175 when Honen, a key figure in Japanese Buddhism, took up residence. Honen, with the support of Jien from the nearby Shorenin Temple, established Yoshimizu Sōdan at Anyoji Temple. He began spreading the teachings of the Jōdo sect. Shinran, the future founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect, joined Honen as a disciple at Anyoji Temple in 1201. Anyoji Temple transitioned to the Jishu sect in 1385 under the monk Kokua. The temple flourished, boasting six subsidiary temples known as Rokuamibo. One of these, Shigeami, became famous as the meeting place of the Ako Ronin during the late Edo period. Today, Anyoji Temple consists of the main hall, Shoin, Yoshimizu-benzaitennyo-do, and a Japanese-style restaurant called “Saami”, formerly one of the Rokuamibo temples. While there may not be grand structures or elaborate displays, the quiet atmosphere of Anyoji Temple allows visitors to connect with its rich spiritual heritage. A visit here offers a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city. It provides a glimpse into the enduring legacy of Japanese Buddhism.
