In 1955, a voice destined to champion freedom was born within these very walls. This is the site of the Antonio Herrero Lima Plaque. It commemorates the life and legacy of a remarkable journalist. Antonio Herrero Lima was a powerful force in Spanish radio. His words resonated with listeners. He fearlessly defended liberty through his broadcasts.
Antonio Herrero Lima’s journey began in Madrid. He followed in his father’s footsteps. His father, Antonio Herrero Losada, was a journalist and co-founder of the Europa Press news agency. The younger Herrero honed his skills at the University of Navarra. He earned a degree in journalism. He worked for various publications including El Norte Deportivo, Diario de Navarra, El Pensamiento Navarro, and ABC. He also contributed to Europa Press. His commitment to freedom took him to London in 1978. He even ventured into the USSR. This experience solidified his dedication to liberty.
In 1983, Herrero Lima’s voice found a wider audience. He joined Antena 3 de Radio. He quickly rose through the ranks. He became director of the morning news program “El primero de la Mañana”. His distinctive style blended information and critique. He wasn’t afraid of controversy. His show became a leader in its time slot. It drew an impressive 985,000 listeners. His talent was recognized in 1987 with an Ondas Award.
Herrero Lima’s career expanded to television. He hosted the interview program “La Tarántula” on Antena 3 Televisión. The show featured discussions with influential political figures of the time. These included Ernest Lluch, Miguel Herrero y Rodríguez de Miñón, and Santiago Carrillo. When Antena 3 de Radio was acquired by Grupo Prisa, Herrero Lima, along with colleagues José María García and Luis Herrero, moved to Cadena COPE. There, he continued to host prominent morning shows. He led the six-hour program “La Mañana” until his untimely death.
Tragically, Herrero Lima’s voice was silenced in 1998. At the age of 43, he died in a diving accident in Marbella. He was at the peak of his career. The Antonio Herrero Lima Plaque stands as a testament to a journalist. He dedicated his life to defending freedom on the airwaves. His legacy continues to inspire those who believe in the power of a free press.
