Forgotten grandeur whispers from these stones. This is Antigo Convento de Monchique. Once a vibrant hub of faith, it now stands in partial ruin. Let’s step back in time and uncover its captivating story.

The story of Antigo Convento de Monchique begins in the 16th century. Pêro Coutinho, a nobleman with no descendants, donated his estate. His aim was to establish a convent dedicated to Saint Francis. Papal authorization arrived in 1535. The old palace of Pêro Coutinho began its transformation into a convent. Master builder Diogo de Castilho oversaw this conversion. He was already famous for his work on the Jerónimos Monastery and the Igreja de Santa Cruz.

Antigo Convento de Monchique expanded over the centuries. It stretched from the hilltop to the Douro River’s edge. Its grand entrance hinted at its former magnificence. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the convent flourished. It was adorned with gardens and cloisters. Fountains added to its beauty. It became one of Porto’s most beautiful and wealthy sites.

However the 19th century brought drastic changes to Antigo Convento de Monchique. The convent was deactivated and divided into lots. It was then sold at public auction. A portion fell into the hands of an English family. Another part became the property of Clemente Meneres. He was a merchant who converted part of the building. It became a wine warehouse and cork factory. Despite changes, the main building stood. It testified to its past greatness.

Before the convent, D. Fernando Don Yahuda Ibn Maner founded Porto’s third synagogue around 1380 here. A document exists from this synagogue. It is an inscription of inauguration. It is the largest known of the Jews in Portugal. The inscription was found in 1826. It is now in the Archaeological Museum of Carmo in Lisbon.

Today it is sad to see the state of Antigo Convento de Monchique. It was once considered one of the city’s most beautiful. Its unique architecture should be a source of preservation. It is linked to Camilo Castelo Branco’s “Amor de Perdição”. Part of the convent has been recovered. It is now part of the Hotel Neya. This project integrates historical heritage with the city’s modern spirit.

The transformation of Antigo Convento de Monchique into Hotel Neya shows recovery efforts. This maintains the memory of this extraordinary place. It played a significant role in Porto’s literature and history. The past should not be forgotten. It should be valued. Future generations can appreciate our rich cultural heritage.

The legacy of Antigo Convento de Monchique remains. It is a story of beauty and generosity. It shows a transformation rooted in literature and Porto’s soul. May its value endure so it is never forgotten.
