The imposing facade speaks volumes. This is the Antiga Fábrica das Devesas. Its history whispers from the weathered stone.
Once a bustling ceramic factory the Antiga Fábrica now stands as a testament to Porto’s industrial past. Three buildings formed its complex. The largest housed offices a showroom and warehouse. Its imposing facade faced Rua José Falcão. A smaller building served as a marble workshop with living quarters above. A house nearby belonged to one of the factory’s three partners Feliciano Rodrigues da Rocha.
The marble workshop building our focus today is a remarkable example of adaptive reuse. Though classified as a Monument of Public Interest its interior was completely demolished when restoration began. Only the facades and roof remained albeit in poor condition.
The architects faced a significant challenge. They had to balance preserving the historic structure with modern needs. The main and east-facing facades underwent meticulous restoration. No alterations were made. The south facade already significantly altered received a new color scheme. A round glass window was added for geometric balance and to improve interaction with the surroundings.
Step inside. The interior retains the essence of the old stone warehouse. A grand space bathed in natural light reveals the impressive height previously hidden from the street. The restored structure incorporates exposed elements. The reinforced structure the renovated roof and the top floor showcase the apartment entrances and large skylights. These let in natural light while preserving the building’s industrial feel. Twelve apartments now occupy the space ranging from lofts with mezzanines to two-bedroom units. The top floor comprises smaller mezzanines for the lofts.
The simple volumes within–cabinets kitchens bathrooms–resemble the stone blocks of the original warehouse. Neutral tones of gray and black contrast with the riga wood floors. These create a stunning modern interior within this historic shell. The Antiga Fábrica das Devesas a space reborn. A place where history and contemporary living intertwine.
