Hidden amidst the urban sprawl of Porto, the Antiga Empresa Industrial do Freixo whispers tales of a forgotten era. The Antiga Empresa Industrial do Freixo stands as a testament to Porto’s industrial past. This imposing structure, once a hive of activity, now lies in ruins, a skeleton of its former self. The Antiga Empresa Industrial do Freixo began its life in 1947. It was the brainchild of the UEP (União Eléctrica Portuguesa), the owners of the nearby Freixo Thermoelectric Power Station. The power station produced a surplus of energy. The UEP sought a way to utilize this excess. The Antiga Empresa Industrial do Freixo, or EIF as it was also known, provided the perfect solution. The EIF’s primary function was to harness this surplus energy to produce calcium carbide and silicon. Calcium carbide was crucial for producing acetylene gas, widely used in lamps at the time. Silicon, on the other hand, was a vital component in the steel and foundry industries. The Antiga Empresa Industrial do Freixo was a marvel of engineering for its time. Two distinct furnaces roared within its walls. One dedicated to lime production and the other to the creation of calcium carbide. Remarkably, this continuous operation required no more than 50 workers. The symbiotic relationship between the EIF and the power station benefited both entities. The power station found a productive outlet for its excess energy. The EIF had a readily available power source. This arrangement fueled the EIF’s success for many years. This industrial harmony came to an end in 1974. The Antiga Empresa Industrial do Freixo ceased operations. The reasons for its closure remain shrouded in mystery. Since then, the site has been left abandoned, a haunting reminder of its bustling past. Nature has begun to reclaim the site. Walls stand tall amidst overgrown vegetation. Today, only pigeons, birds, and perhaps rodents inhabit this once-thriving industrial complex. Despite its decay, the land on which the Antiga Empresa Industrial do Freixo sits holds immense value. It boasts a prime location with stunning views of the Douro River. It offers easy access to the Freixo Bridge, the A1 motorway, and the EN 108 road connecting Entre-os-Rios. Its proximity to public transport further adds to its appeal. The Antiga Empresa Industrial do Freixo stands as a poignant reminder of Porto’s industrial heritage. It serves as a silent witness to the passage of time and the changing fortunes of industry.
