Did this man, forever cast in bronze, die a happy man? We stand before the Antero de Figueiredo Bust, a tribute to one of Portugal’s most celebrated literary figures. The bust, unveiled in 1966, marks the centenary of Figueiredo’s birth. Antero de Figueiredo, born in Coimbra, found his final resting place here in Porto. He was a man of many talents – a writer, a traveler, and a lover of the Portuguese language. His novels, often passionate and historical, captured the hearts of readers. His travelogues, like “Jornadas em Portugal” and “Espanha”, transported readers to distant lands. Figueiredo, a devout Catholic, infused his later works with religious themes. “Amor Supremo” and “Non Sum Dignus” stand as testaments to his faith. Before he left us in 1953, he left behind a legacy of beautiful prose and an enduring love for his craft. Looking at this bust, one can’t help but wonder about the stories he would tell if he could.
