How would you like to experience a landscape seemingly untouched by time? That is Antelope Island. Today, we will journey to Antelope Island State Park. It is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake.

Antelope Island stretches 15 miles long and 4.5 miles wide. The island has a rich history dating back thousands of years.

Imagine stepping onto Antelope Island in 1845 with John C. Frémont and Kit Carson. They were the first non-natives to set foot here. They named it Antelope Island out of gratitude for a pronghorn they hunted here.

Prehistoric peoples occupied Antelope Island over 6,000 years ago. Archaeological evidence confirms their presence. Forty freshwater springs sustained them.

Now picture bison roaming freely. John Dooly Sr. introduced them in 1893. He brought twelve bison to Antelope Island. These bison became the foundation of today’s herd. The Antelope Island bison herd is vital for conservation.

Think about the geology. The island’s rocks are some of the oldest in the United States. They are older than those at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Consider the early settlers. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ranched here from 1848. Fielding Garr managed the ranch. His house, built in 1848, remains. It is the oldest Mormon-built home in Utah on its original foundation.

By 1900, settlement attempts failed. Only the Fielding Garr Ranch remained inhabited. John Dooly Sr. then purchased the island.

From atop Frary Peak at 6,596 feet you can see breathtaking views. It is the highest point on Antelope Island.

Antelope Island became a state park in 1969 and was completed in 1981. Today Antelope Island State Park hosts many activities. You can hike, cycle, and birdwatch.

Each autumn, the Bison Roundup occurs. Tourists come from around the world. Bison are herded. They are vaccinated. Excess bison are auctioned off.

Imagine millions of birds migrating. Antelope Island is a haven for over 250 bird species. It lies on the Pacific Flyway.

Picture bighorn sheep thriving. They were reintroduced in the late 1990s. Antelope Island provides a protected nursery herd for them.

Envision a landscape teeming with wildlife. Pronghorn, mule deer, coyotes, and bobcats roam here. This is Antelope Island’s wild beauty.

As we conclude our tour, reflect on Antelope Island. It is a unique blend of history, geology, and wildlife. Its stories echo through the ages.
