Dreaming of a beacon of faith? Ansgar Kirke stands as a testament to community and devotion in Flensburg. This Lutheran church is named after Saint Ansgar. He was known as the “Apostle of the North.”
Ansgar Kirke’s story began in 1948. The Flensburg North Congregation was established. A pastor named Martin Nørgaard proposed a new church in 1949. He faced difficulties raising funds. The church finally purchased the grounds in 1962.
Construction became possible through a generous donation. A.P. Møller and his wife, Chastine Mckinney Møller, funded the church and community hall. The building’s design was inspired by Notmark Kirke. That church is located on the Danish island of Als.
Kay Fisker was the initial architect. Sadly, he died before construction started. Architects Robert Duelund Mortensen and Svend Høgsbroe completed his vision. Construction began in 1966. Ansgar Kirke was finally dedicated on November 3, 1968.
The church stands out with its yellow brick and red tile roof. It is a blend of modern and classic styles. The bright interior creates a welcoming atmosphere.
Ansgar Kirke quickly became a central point for the Danish community. The congregation grew to be the largest within the Danish Church in Southern Schleswig. Today, it has approximately 650 members. They belong to around 500 households.
Over the years, several pastors have led the congregation. These include Otto Marius Warncke and Martin Friedrich Nørgaard. Christian Overgaard and Martin Torodd Kontni also served. Bjarne Sandal and Per Østerbye contributed to the church’s spiritual guidance. Sten Haarløv, Preben Kortnum Morgensen, and Christina Theresia Frøkjær have shaped the church. Since 2019, Merethe Neldebjerg Jørgensen has been the pastor.
Ansgar Kirke received monument protection on January 5, 2007. It underwent remodeling in 2008. The church is not only a place of worship. It is a protected landmark.
