Deep in the heart of Chengdu Plain lies Anren, a town steeped in history and brimming with cultural treasures. Anren, known as the “Town of Chinese Museums,” offers a captivating glimpse into China’s rich past. Anren’s history stretches back to 620 AD, a testament to its enduring legacy. The town earned its name, meaning “finding peace in benevolence,” reflecting its tranquil atmosphere and rich cultural heritage.

Anren boasts an impressive collection of over 30 museums. Among them is the Jianchuan Museum Cluster, China’s largest private museum. This sprawling complex houses over 8 million artifacts, including 404 Class-One National Treasures. The museum’s collections span diverse themes, from the Second Sino-Japanese War to the Wenchuan Earthquake, offering a poignant reflection on China’s resilience and its ability to learn from the past. Another key attraction is the Liu’s Manor, former residence of the influential landlord Liu Wencai. The manor museum displays 20,000 cultural relics, providing valuable insights into the economy, culture, and warlord history of semi-colonial and semi-feudal China. The adjacent Liu Wenhui’s Mansion, though never inhabited by its namesake, stands as the largest mansion in Anren, a symbol of power and status.

Anren’s charm extends beyond its museums to its well-preserved ancient streets: Shuren, Yumin, and Hongxing. These streets, built during the Republic of China era, are lined with traditional brick-wood buildings, exuding an antique flavor. Shuren Street, once dubbed “Officer Street,” housed the mansions and shops of eight officers. Yumin Street, funded by Liu Wencai, offered amenities like tea houses and theaters. Hongxing Street, originally called Weixing Street, housed the shops of Liu Wenzhao and Liu Wencai. These streets offer a fascinating glimpse into the town’s past, showcasing the architectural and cultural influences of the time. Two film museums, the Cui Yongyuan Film Legend Museum and the Old Film Museum, add another layer to Anren’s cultural tapestry.

Beyond Anren’s historical and cultural attractions lies the natural beauty of Heming Mountain, a short drive away. This Taoist mountain, shaped like a red-crowned crane, offers a serene escape into nature and an opportunity to explore Taoism. Anren seamlessly blends its past and present, offering visitors a unique and enriching experience. Whether strolling along its ancient streets, exploring its numerous museums, or enjoying the tranquility of Heming Mountain, Anren leaves a lasting impression. The town stands as a testament to China’s rich history and enduring spirit.
