Gothic-Renaissance architecture rises before you. This is the Church of the Annunciation. It stands in Manhattanville a testament to faith and community.

The Church of the Annunciation’s story began in October 1852. Archbishop John Hughes appointed Rev. Arthur J. Donnelly as the first pastor. Imagine a small gathering in a donated colonial-style house. It served as both a church and school. This was the humble beginning of a parish that would grow and thrive.

In November 1853 Archbishop Gaetano Bedini laid the cornerstone at West 131st Street and Old Broadway. He was the first Papal envoy to the United States. This marked a significant step for the Church of the Annunciation. By winter 1854 the church was complete. The Very Reverend William Stares dedicated it. Manhattan College students frequented the church. They used it for prayer retreats and graduation Masses.

As the 20th century dawned Manhattanville transformed. Country estates gave way to an urban landscape. The Irish congregation of the Church of the Annunciation grew rapidly. The original church became too small. In September 1906 a new cornerstone was laid. This time it was at West 131st Street and Convent Avenue. Archbishop John Farley dedicated the completed church on December 15 1907. The new building could seat 700 people.

Interestingly elements from the old church were incorporated into the new one. The stained glass windows the brass altar rail and the baptismal font all found a new home here at the Church of the Annunciation. A school was built alongside the church on West 131st Street. It served the community for many years. A new addition to the school was added in 1964.

In 1977 the Church of the Annunciation took a new direction. The Piarist Fathers assumed pastoral guidance. Their leadership continues to shape the parish. The Church of the Annunciation stands as a beacon of faith. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of its community. It has evolved through different eras. It has adapted to changing times. Its history is interwoven with the story of Manhattanville. The Church of the Annunciation is still here for all. It offers solace inspiration and a sense of belonging.
