She came from a Roman Catholic aristocratic family. Tutors educated her. She lived much of her life in isolation. Levin Schücking introduced her to literature. Despite their age difference, she had a deep passion for him. It was unreciprocated.

Her first poetry collection was “Gedichte” in 1838. These poems were deeply religious. From 1829 to 1839, she wrote religious poems. They became “Das geistliche Jahr” in 1851. This work shows her spiritual doubts. It is some of the most earnest religious poetry of the 19th century.

Annette von Droste-Hülshoff is most famous for poems about Westphalia. She keenly observed her surroundings. She created detailed descriptions of poetic beauty. Her poems captured the atmosphere of her homeland. She especially highlighted the gloomy heaths and moorlands.

Her novella “Die Judenbuche” came out in 1842. It is a psychological study of a villager. He murders a Jew. This was a first in German literature. The hero’s fate comes from his social environment. The crime is understandable in the village context.
