A 135-foot-tall tower piercing the Chennai sky That’s Anna Nagar Tower Park’s iconic landmark. Built in 1968 for an international trade fair it has seen much. It offered panoramic city views attracting visitors from far and wide.
Anna Nagar Tower Park wasn’t always a tranquil oasis. In its prime it was the undisputed icon of Anna Nagar. The tower became notorious. Suicides and antisocial behavior marred its reputation. Neglect and vandalism took their toll. Yet the tower remained a symbol of Anna Nagar.
Following numerous suicides in 2011 access was restricted. The tower remained closed for years. Anna Nagar residents still cherished it. Seven years after its closure renovation began. The plan was to reopen the park to the public.
Local officials received public requests for reopening. They analyzed the area. A decision was made to restore the tower. Safety was a primary concern. The bottom three floors already had safety grills. The remaining floors would also receive new safety grills.
Renovation costs were estimated at 30 lakh rupees. This included new railings lighting and other improvements. After approval work would begin. Completion was expected within 30 to 40 days.
Anna Nagar Tower Park has two entrances. One is on Third Main Road near a Tower Club. The other is on Sixth Main Road near the Ayyappan Temple. Visitors can reach the top via a spiral ramp or an elevator. The tower is a testament to the enduring spirit of Chennai and its people. It’s a place where history meets the present.
