Overhead, the imposing Anna Nagar Arch stretches towards the sky. What secrets does this Chennai landmark hold? The Anna Nagar Arch isn’t just a pretty gateway. It stands as a symbol of respect, commemorating the platinum jubilee of C. N. Annadurai, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. This towering structure, marking the entrance to Anna Nagar from the south, was completed in a remarkably short period, just 105 days, back in 1985. Officially opened on January 1, 1986, the Anna Nagar Arch was designed by the renowned sculptor Ganapathy Sthapathi. Imagine the grand opening ceremony, led by none other than the then Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran. The Anna Nagar Arch isn’t just about grandeur, it’s a story of resilience. In 2012, plans for a flyover threatened the arch’s existence. Demolition loomed, but public outcry and a slight route adjustment saved this iconic landmark. Restored to its former glory, the Anna Nagar Arch, standing tall at 57 feet, continues to welcome visitors to the vibrant neighborhood it represents.
